The town was completely destroyed and large parts of Walcheren were flooded by the sea when the dyke collapsed due to Allied bombing in October 1944. It took one year until it was restored.[de]Mahnmal zum 2. Weltkrieg. Im Otober 1944 wurde der gesamte Ort Westkapelle völlig zerstört und große Teile von Walcheren vom Meer überflutet, als der Deich durch alliierte Bombenangriffe aufgebrochen wurde; er war erst ein Jahr später wiederhergestellt.
